Secret Grand Juries +White Police and Prosecutors=No Justice & Dead Black Men

Editor's Statement - #BlackLivesMatter Local Prosecutors have Conflict of Interest Prosecuting  Police  Special Prosecutor Needed when Police kills African American No Secret Grand Jury #BlackLivesMatter   The Grand Jury The grand jury, a secret, anti-democratic and coercive tool, has been used repeatedly by prosecutors in the US to indict people whom they want to indict. If you're called before a grand jury, you have no rights, can't take a lawyer with you, and you're compelled to testify or face possible jail time. This process has been used and abused by prosecutors to produce indictments when that is the outcome that the prosecutor wants. It is this history that calls into serious question the prosecutorial conduct in both the Ferguson, Missouri, murder of Michael Brown and the Staten Island, New York, murder…

Police Brutality – Protect Your Rights

Police Brutality https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibSwITK4jjQ Police brutality and outright murder against Black people in the US  is a persistent problem that will not go away. One Black Man Is Killed Every 28 Hours by Police or Vigilantes. It has been said, and demonstrated in practice, that police in America have a license to kill Blacks with impunity. The killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri is only one of numerous cases of police violence and murder against African Americans. And, in every case that I can think of or recall, going as far back as Arthur Miller in Brooklyn, the police got away with murder.  From Abner Louima and Amadou Diallo (pictured below ) to Sean Bell (pictured left) and Oscar Grant, Black men in the United States of America are murdered,…

Kamala Harris Is Trying to Define Her Vice Presidency. Even Her Allies Are Tired of Waiting.

WASHINGTON — Kamala Harris was frustrated. The text of a speech she had been given to deliver in Chicago to the nation’s biggest teachers’ union was just another dreary, scripted talk that said little of any consequence. As Air Force Two made its way to the Midwest over the summer, the vice president told her staff she wanted to say something more significant, more direct. She brandished a Rolling Stone magazine article about the backlash against Florida school officials after new legislation barring the discussion of gender identity in the classroom. The teachers she was about to address were on the front lines of the nation’s culture wars, Ms. Harris told her staff. They were the same ones on the front lines of school shootings. Just blandly ticking through federal funding for…

VA’21 Tip-Republicans Master Power-Democrats Weak

What lessons should the Democrats learn from the loss of the Governor's race and state House of Delegates in the Virginia 2021 elections and the election night scare in New Jersey? As expected, numerous pundits, news reporters, Democratic and Republican Party operatives, and elected officials have blanketed cable news shows on MSNBC and CNN offering their analyses. Most of that analysis to date has centered on the movement of white so-called swing voters from the Democrats column back to the Republican column. Suburban Swing Voters & White Women. One such group that has been the focus of much pontification is white suburban women. Virginia returns and exit polls suggest that some independents and white women in the suburbs moved to Republicans. Many pundits have talked about swing voters and white…

South Africa: Law and Riot, Riot and Law

The law has no absolute character and always reflects the balance of social forces at the time it was written. It is a terrain of struggle, not a replacement for struggle. Three forms of oppressive authority, all intensely patriarchal, have met significant challenges in recent weeks. The judgment that the high court in Pietermaritzburg handed down on 11 June struck a major blow at the Ingonyama Trust, an oppressive relic of the dying days of apartheid, and its merciless exploitation of some of the most vulnerable people in our society. The police attacked pro-democracy protesters in Mbabane, eSwatini, on 25 June. It is said that a father rushing to the aid of his child, who had collapsed after breathing in tear gas, was shot in the back. This ignited an…

Africa: President Cyril Ramaphosa – South Africa’s Response to Coronavirus Covid-19 Pandemic

Fellow South Africans, Our former President Nelson Mandela once wrote: "I have walked that long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way. "But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb". As a country, we have faced two devastating waves of coronavirus infections. We have overcome these by responding swiftly and decisively, and by acting together to contain the spread of the virus and protect ourselves, our families and our communities. We now face another great challenge, another hill to climb. Twelve days ago, I addressed you to warn that a new and deadly third wave of infections had begun in a number of our provinces, and…

President Biden on Thursday signed legislation to make Juneteenth a federal holiday, the day after the House voted overwhelmingly to enshrine June 19 as the national day to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. The Senate rushed the measure through with no debate earlier this week after clearing away a longstanding Republican objection, and the House approved it on Wednesday by a vote of 415 to 14, with 14 Republicans opposed. Mr. Biden said he counted signing the legislation into law as one of the greatest honors he will have as president. Ms. Harris also signed the legislation in her capacity as President of the Senate, an administration official said.“Throughout history, Juneteenth has been known by many names: Jubilee Day, Freedom Day, Liberation Day, Emancipation Day and, today,…

Zimbabweans Protest Covid-19 Vaccine Shortages

Harare — Hundreds of Zimbabweans protested Wednesday about a shortage of COVID-19 vaccines as the country awaits more doses from China. The government wants to inoculate at least 60% of Zimbabwe's more than 14 million people by the end of the year but has struggled to get the necessary supplies. Claudina Maneni brought her 60-year-old mother to get her second vaccine dose Wednesday at Wilkins Hospital, Zimbabwe's main COVID-19 vaccination center. She was among people who arrived at 4 a.m. but waited in vain for hours. The crowd demanded to see authorities and began to protest but dispersed upon hearing police were on their way. Maneni says she wonders why Zimbabwe's finance minister, Mthuli Ncube, has not imported more vaccines to avert shortages. "That's the problem with freebies. Shortages must…

Zimbabwe: Gold Smuggling Syndicates Exposed

A new report has illustrated the depth of the gold smuggling scourge in Zimbabwe, estimating that over 70% of the country's output has found its way into backstage international markets. Titled, 'Illicit Gold Markets in East and Southern Africa', the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime's report said the 10% to 30% of authorised buyers still selling bullion to the state-run Fidelity Printers and Refiners (FPR) were only doing so to keep their licences. Global Initiative estimated that about 50% of Zimbabwe's estimated 1,5 million artisanal and small-scale gold miners (ASGM) have been spiriting away the yellow metal. The scale of the losses becomes apparent after considering that these miners produce about half of the gold traded in Zimbabwe annually, after a bloodbath in big gold mines since the turn…

Africa Day Marks Resistance to State-Sponsored Homophobia

Africa will not be free until all its people are free and LGBTI persons are allowed to live their lives without fear, says South African-based advocacy organisation Iranti. “ Across the continent we see countries acting against law-abiding citizens because they do not conform to a heteronormative view of the world. Yet perpetrators of gender-based violence operate with impunity,” said Iranti executive director Jabu Pereira. “ Lesbian, gay, transgender persons, bisexual and intersex persons live in fear across the continent. The pandemic has been difficult for Africa but even more so for our communities who are struggling to survive in increasingly hostile environments.” Pereira noted that organisations expressed concern early last year that the pandemic would be used to further clamp down on LGBTIQ organisations. “ Organisations are struggling to survive at a time…

A statement, addressed to no one in particular -- dated May 13 issued by AAM chairperson, Rafiq Hajat -- describes the Immigration officials conduct in the operation as unconstitutional and that they allegedly refused to show their identity papers. The statement explains that on the night of Sunday May 9, the residents of Area 2 "were peacefully asleep when they suddenly were awakened by furious banging at their front doors at approximately 1 am". Malawi President Eyes Mining As Key Money Maker

Blantyre, Malawi — Malawi's President Lazarus Chakwera has announced plans to reform the country's mining sector to boost the economy and crack down on rampant, illegal mining and mineral smuggling. Chakwera said, if properly regulated, mining could play a major role in Malawi's economy, currently one of the poorest in Africa. Malawi's president, in a national television address late Sunday, said a well-regulated mining sector has the potential to develop the country's economy. Lazarus Chakwera noted that despite a lot of mineral resources in Malawi, the sector has faced exploitation not only by foreigners but also local miners. He gave an example of uranium mining activities in the Kayelekera area of northern Malawi, run by Australia-based company Paladin Africa, which he said did not yield the desired results. "Although the…

Tim Scott Argues That Systemic Racism Doesn’t Exist by Saying He’s Been Pulled Over for Being Black 18 Times

A big talking point for the current incarnation of the GOP is that racism doesn’t exist. During his recent address to America, Joe Biden talked about systemic racism and how the country might combat the issue. To Tim Scott, who gave the rebuttal to Biden’s speech, it isn’t all that big a deal. The South Carolina lawmaker said to viewers, “Hear me clearly: America is not a racist country. It’s backwards to fight discrimination with different types of discrimination. And it’s wrong to try to use our painful past to dishonestly shut down debates in the present.” Scott gave a strange explanation for his comments during a Sunday appearance on Meet the Press. He told John Dickerson: “One of the reasons I have asked to lead this police reform conversation…

Mozambique: Trial Starts of Killers of Portuguese Businesswoman

Maputo — The trial began in Beira on Tuesday of three men accused of murdering Portuguese citizen Ines Bota on 28 December 2017, by drowning her in the Pungue river. Only two of the accused, Jonas Maita and Danilo Lampiao, are in the dock. The third, Isaias Joao, escaped from prison and will be tried in absentia. Maita and Lampiao both confessed to the crime, thus confirming statements they had given to the police shortly after the murder. Bota was the financial director of Ferpinta, a Beira company that makes steel tubes. One of the three men was her personal trainer, which may explain why she gave the three a lift, after a training session at the Beira Nautical Club. Lampiao told the court that, when the car reached the…

Mozambique: Inside al Shabaab – Insurgents Join Due to Poverty – Many Would Quit, So ‘Best Counter-insurgency Strategy’ is Development & Jobs

An important new picture of the inside of al Shabaab is provided by interviews with 23 women who had been captured and eventually escaped, in a study published yesterday by João Feijó, one of the most important investigators of the Cabo Delgado war. Feijo is technical coordinator of OMR, the Rural Environment Observatory, and the study (in Portuguese) is on https://omrmz.org/omrweb/publicacoes/or-109/ Most of the fighters are young, from Cabo Delgado, angry at the government and less interested in religion, while the leadership is foreign (mostly Tanzanian), educated, and religious. Al Shabaab “proved adept at capitalising on the local population's historical feelings of exclusion, compounded by resentment towards state violence, leading them to rebel against the state but also against their communities of origin,” Feijo notes. There is “great resentment towards…

Africa: 5G Opens the Gates for Surveillance On Steroids

It's the beginning: 5G will bring radical changes in how we live, with far-reaching implications for privacy and surveillance. Although the tech is new, decades-old legislation* already paves the way for South African authorities to access citizens' information through their personal smart devices. Imagine a world where police no longer needed human witnesses. One where they could determine that, while inside your home, you walked exactly 453m between 9.18am and 10.05am? Or perhaps they could prove that you're lying, since they have medical records reflecting your cardiac rhythms during a specific timeframe? These are actual cases where police in the US traced minute details of people's lives through their smart devices.
