This dynamic half-hour is a stunning performance documentary on the lives and creations of the two African American opera singers who gave us first American musicals. Winner of 8 international film-festival awards and an all-screens Telly, VOICES FOR FREEDOM also reveals oft-hidden post-Civil War history and features internationally acclaimed artists, such as Metropolitan Opera diva Denyce Graves and acclaimed baritone Robert Sims. FURTHER DETAIL: In the perilous 1870’s and 80’s, when night riders and lynching terrorized black people and minstrels in blackface ridiculed them across the land, The Hyers Sisters (nationally popular, black, touring-opera prodigies) stood up to become Voices for Freedom. They fought the blackface minstrels’ ridicule with charming musical works that revealed the depth and dignity of African Americans to mainstream audiences as among many Americans who seek the American dream. These works are now known as the first American musicals, being the first works to use song (spirituals, contemporary song, and opera) to illumine a story and to integrate casting in American Music theater. The film celebrates the Hyers' rich legacy in performance with internationally renowned artists, such Tichina Vaughn, Robert Sims, Hope Briggs, Shawnette Sulker, star of Lion King, Omari Tau, and master drummer Pope Flyne. It also offers enactments, narration, and expert commentary to reveal the social struggles of the Hyers' times and to shed light upon our own. Acclaimed soprano-actress Susheel Bibbs appears in ensemble and as groundbreaking newswoman Delilah Beasley. Super star of opera, musicals, and television Denyce Graves-Montgomery hosts. =Buy Bibbs' Booklet also on The Hyers Sisters at https://www.createspace.com/6387168 =see the Trailer/Promo: www.TheHyersSisters.com
